Adoption FAQ's

What to know before your bring your pet home.

1. What is the adoption process like at Sammy’s? Our process is relationship-first and thoughtful. Each animal is carefully matched with an adopter who fits their needs and personality. You’ll start by completing an application, and then we’ll schedule a conversation to learn more about you and your lifestyle to ensure a great fit.

2. How long does it take for a rescue dog to adjust to a new home? Most dogs need about 4 months to fully decompress. This “decompression” phase is when they begin to relax, feel safe, and start showing their true personality. Patience and consistency during this time are key.

3. How can I make the transition easier for my new dog? Keep things calm, quiet, and consistent. Avoid overwhelming your new pet with too many new people or places right away. Provide a cozy, safe space like a crate or quiet room, and let your dog come to you when they’re ready.

4. Should I crate train my rescue dog? Yes. We recommend crate training as a positive, safe method to help your dog settle. A crate provides structure and can ease anxiety, aid house training, and help your dog establish their own space.

5. What should I do to prepare my home before adoption? Have the basics ready: food and water bowls, collar and leash, a few safe toys, a bed or crate, and treats for training. Stick to the food your new dog is used to for at least a week to prevent stomach issues. Set up a consistent feeding and potty routine.

6. How do I introduce my new dog to kids or other pets? Take it slow. Start introductions outside or in neutral spaces when possible. With children, coach them to stay calm and quiet—let the dog approach on their own terms. Always supervise early interactions and allow your new pet to retreat to their safe space when needed.
